When Chicago publisher W.D. Boyce visited London in 1909 he encountered the Unknown Scouts, the English predecessor of the modern day Boy Scouts.
Boyce was inspired by the organization and saw the youth movement as a means to teach patriotism and individualism while promoting mental physical, social and religious development.
The following year he officially incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.
